Description

Epergne-Russet 2019 is a collaboration between Little Pomona of Herefordshire & The Fine Cider Company of London. Drawn from 2019 & 2020, it’s mostly Egremont Russet (87%) apples aged for eight months in ex-Chardonnay barrels, with 13% of Browns Apple & Dabinett aged 15 months in a former rum barrel.

The name marries the Egremont, being a russetted apple, with epergne (pronounced: epp-earn) meaning ‘an ornamental centrepiece for a dining table, typically used for holding fruit or flowers’. Epergnes came to prominence during the heyday of cider & perry in the 1700s.

The drawing is by Fine Cider’s own Aqsa Qureshi, & comes partly from visiting Little Pomona – the rich sun, the spiky tree line on the ridge above, the river tucked away at the bottom of the valley, the green cut grass. But it is also from tasting the drink: it’s light but then some lovely bitterness kicks in. And there’s some smooth, bold barrel vibes.
