Georg Matthäus Scherdel was the founder of the Scherdel Hof brewery. On April 23, 1831, he received permission to practice the bakery trade, and he was soon brewing beer in the municipal breweries in the city of Hof. Later, when the capacity of the public community breweries was no longer sufficient, he built his own brewery next to the Felsenkeller in Unterkotzauer Weg.
